When Haute Couture Meets Master Craftsmanship: Acrylic Deluxe x Iris van Herpen

At Acrylic Deluxe, our daily passion lies in crafting bespoke, museum-grade acrylic furniture. From crystal-clear coffee tables to architectural consoles, we take pride in pushing the limits of clarity, weightlessness, and form.
However, our deep expertise in acrylic manipulation occasionally opens doors to extraordinary artistic journeys. Recently, we received an incredible opportunity: collaborating with the world-renowned, visionary fashion house Iris van Herpen for their groundbreaking Haute Couture collection.
The Vision: Wearable Sculptures in 12mm Acrylic
Iris van Herpen is celebrated globally for merging technology, nature, and high fashion. For their collection, the design team envisioned sculptural corseted tops and structured flared skirts made of thick, crystal-clear acrylic.
The requirement was demanding: shaping solid 12mm thick acrylic sheets into complex, ergonomic 3D curves that hug the human body.
In the world of acrylic fabrication, 12mm is a substantial thickness. While thin acrylic can be easily heat-bent along a single axis, molding a 12mm solid sheet into multi-axis, organic, anatomical contours without optical distortions, bubbles, or stress fractures is a monumental technical challenge.
The Engineering Challenge: Matrix, Punch & Thermoforming
When we took on the project, we knew conventional bending techniques wouldn't work. The organic curves required a specialized engineering approach:
Precision Mold Making (Matrix & Punch): We engineered custom two-part wooden molds—a matching matrix (female mold) and punch (male mold)—carved precisely to mirror the anatomical contours of the top and skirt silhouettes.
Controlled Thermoforming: Using high-temperature thermoforming, the 12mm acrylic sheets were heated to their exact glass transition state, allowing the material to become pliable without losing its pristine clarity.
Molding & Calibration: The softened acrylic was pressed between our custom matrix and punch setup, holding the compound curves under controlled pressure as the material cooled and set.
Jewelry-Grade Finishing: Once cured, each piece underwent rigorous hand-sanding, edge-carving, and diamond-polishing in our workshop to achieve flawless, liquid-smooth edges.
From Workshop Execution to Paris Runway Magic
Seeing the raw, thermoformed 12mm forms on our workshop tables transition into finished Haute Couture pieces was breathtaking.
Combined with intricate Lichtenberg electric neural patterns embedded within the garments and delicate tulle drapery, the acrylic tops and skirts illuminated the runway. The transparent, sculpted shells caught the light, creating an otherworldly, glowing exoskeleton that mesmerized the fashion world.

This collaboration with Iris van Herpen proved that with deep material knowledge and engineering creativity, acrylic transcends traditional furniture design. It is a fluid, sculptural medium capable of turning the most complex artistic visions into reality.
